He Was Abandoned in a Bag and Now He’s ‘Dad’ to Over 400 Puppies

Twelve years ago, a tiny 4-week-old puppy named River was found stuffed in a bag on the side of the road with his sister. Fast forward to today, and River isn’t just living a happy life—he’s helped raise over 400 orphaned puppies.

River was the very first puppy taken in by New England Puppy Rescue’s orphan program, founded by Marissa. The program supports abandoned or rejected puppies under 6 weeks old, giving them a second chance at life. River didn’t just survive—he became the heart of the program.

Despite never having puppies of his own, River took on a “dad” role like a pro. When orphan pups squabble, River calmly steps in like a true peacekeeper. When shy or struggling pups need comfort, he’s right there, snuggling close to help them feel safe. He even puts up with the occasional nursing attempt—though, as Marissa laughs, “There’s no milk there, guys!”

What’s incredible is that River does all this by choice. No one forces him to interact with the puppies—he waits patiently at the gate, asking to be let in. And once inside, he teaches them how to dog…better than any human could.

River’s story is a powerful reminder: a rough beginning doesn’t define your future. From abandoned baby to beloved mentor, River proves that love, patience, and a wagging tail can change everything.
