On Christmas Eve, while many were celebrating with loved ones, a heavily pregnant dog was quietly abandoned in front of the IAPA animal rescue center. She was cold, weak, and terrified—just days away from giving birth.
The dog, later named Mam Natajuli, was around 8 weeks pregnant when she was found. “She couldn’t even stand,” a rescuer recalled. “She had clearly been through a lot, both physically and emotionally.”
At first, Natajuli was defensive, trying to protect herself and her unborn puppies. “She used the little energy she had left to growl and keep us away. It was all fear,” they said. But with patience and gentle care, she eventually let her guard down and accepted help.
Veterinarians estimated she was carrying up to 14 puppies—a dangerously large litter, especially for a dog in such fragile condition. She was quickly taken in for testing and an ultrasound to make sure she and her pups were okay. Thankfully, she was stable enough to return to the shelter with support in place for her delivery.
Just days later, Mam Natajuli went into labor. “The first puppy was strong and alert. And then came the rest,” said a team member who stayed with her through the night. In the end, she delivered 14 healthy, chubby puppies—a miracle considering her condition just a short time before.
Natajuli’s face told the whole story. “You could see relief and pride. She did it.”
Both mother and babies were later taken for a full check-up. Natajuli blushed under the attention, and her puppies were declared healthy—all gaining weight and growing quickly.
Now safe, loved, and surrounded by people who care, Natajuli is finally resting. The team at IAPA has asked the public to help name the 14 adorable pups. “It’s hard to name that many little ones, but we want the community to be part of their journey,” they shared.
With a mother as strong and gentle as Natajuli, these puppies are off to a great start in life.
