In a shocking case of animal cruelty, a young dog was found floating inside a garbage bag on the Magdalena River—sick, skinny, and clinging to life. The dog, now named Magdalena, was rescued just in time and has since made a remarkable recovery.
The rescue took place on a weekend during a casual river outing. A group was traveling by chalupa (a small boat) along the Magdalena River, between Girardot and Flandes, when they spotted something unusual. Floating along the coastline was a package, oddly moving, that caught their attention.

“We asked the driver to turn around so we could get a closer look,” one of the rescuers shared in a video. “We started speculating about what it could be, and that’s why we started recording.” When they reached the object and pulled it aboard, they were stunned to discover a live dog inside a tied-up trash bag.
The dog was visibly traumatized—sad, weak, sick, and severely underweight—but her eyes, the rescuer said, were striking. “That beautiful look captivated us immediately.”

Magdalena was named after the river where she was found. Though she was initially terrified, she quickly responded to gentle care. After receiving food, rest, and support, she began to show signs of trust. Within days, she bonded with another dog in her new home and started adapting to her surroundings.
A veterinary check-up a week later confirmed she was at least five kilograms underweight, but otherwise in surprisingly stable condition. Her recovery continued quickly—she learned to play, responded to basic training, and became playful and affectionate.

Her story went viral online and was even featured on local television. While fame means little to Magdalena, her new life is filled with love, comfort, and attention.
There were lasting emotional scars. She remained deeply afraid of water, making bathing difficult. It took nearly two weeks of patience before she could be washed without panic. But thanks to consistent care, she overcame even that fear.

Today, Magdalena enjoys daily games of fetch, naps in her bed, walks with her new family, and recently took her first road trip. She also visits a local rescue community where she has met other dogs with similar pasts—now adopted and thriving.
Magdalena’s story is a reminder of the importance of compassion and the power of rescue. Her case highlights not only the cruelty animals can suffer, but also the life-changing impact that one act of kindness can have.

Animal welfare advocates continue to encourage the public to report abuse and consider adoption. “If you see an abandoned animal, don’t walk away. The road is tough at first—but just look at Magdalena now.”
