In the aftermath of an earthquake and landslide in the Develi district of Kayseri, Turkey, a quiet act of compassion turned into a life-saving mission. Soner Buyumez, a veterinarian assistant working on a nearby farm, had no idea his day would end with a heroic rescue that would touch hearts across the world.

While crossing a road in the remote, quake-stricken area, Buyumez heard faint, panicked cries echoing through the dust and debris. Following the sound, he discovered a tragic sight: a mother dog trapped up to her neck in a mound of collapsed soil.

A Den Turned into a Trap

Authorities believe the dog, having survived the recent earthquake, had dug a makeshift den to protect her newborn puppies from the elements. But the ground had been made unstable by aftershocks and tremors. The den collapsed in a sudden landslide, burying her and her puppies alive.

Buyumez, accompanied by a friend, didn’t hesitate. With bare hands and urgency, they began to dig, calling out softly to the terrified dog: “Come, my dear, come.

Their determination paid off. The mother dog was pulled free—shaken, but alive. However, the work was far from over. Her puppies were still trapped beneath the soil.

One by One

Carefully and methodically, the two rescuers continued to dig. One by one, eight puppies were pulled from the rubble. It was a painstaking process that lasted nearly an hour.

Tragically, one of the puppies did not survive. But the mother dog and seven of her newborns were saved, thanks to the quick thinking and compassion of the two men.

A Temporary Home and a Future

Rather than leaving the animals behind, Buyumez took the entire family home with him. He’s caring for them personally until they’re strong and healthy enough to be adopted. The puppies are being bottle-fed, kept warm, and closely monitored. Their mother remains by their side, recovering in safety after her traumatic ordeal.

Kindness in Crisis

As natural disasters continue to leave devastation in their wake, stories like this are a reminder that heroism doesn’t always make headlines—but it makes a difference.

“There are angels everywhere,” one witness said. “These men didn’t just save animals. They showed us all what quiet courage and kindness look like.”

The rescue of this mother dog and her puppies offers a glimmer of hope amid the destruction—a testament to the power of empathy in times of crisis.
