It started with a phone call. A woman reported seeing a dog lying in a ditch, crying and barely moving. When rescuers arrived, they found him crawling, weak and terrified. As they approached, he attempted to flee, but his legs betrayed him. His hindquarters wouldn’t respond. Instead, he collapsed, eyes wide and filled with an ocean of sorrow.

He was exhausted, hungry, and hopeless. No one knew how long he had been there, cold and alone, unable to stand or even properly cry for help. His condition was alarming, but what came next would be even more devastating.
The medical team began their examinations. An echocardiogram. A biochemical blood test. An X-ray. What they found changed the story from tragic to heartbreaking: Ryzhik hadn’t been hit by a car, as initially feared. He had been shot. Twice.
Bullets had pierced his spine and internal organs, leaving his hind legs paralyzed and damaging his urinary system. The wounds were old enough to suggest he’d been suffering like this for some time.
Why anyone would do this to a gentle, innocent animal was beyond comprehension.
Despite his pain, Ryzhik showed no aggression. He was calm, even kind. And most telling of all, he was starving—scarfing down food with desperate enthusiasm. The team realized just how long he’d been without a proper meal.
After surgery, he began a rigorous recovery regimen. Twice a day, a therapist gave him massages. They hoped for a miracle—that Ryzhik might walk again. For a few brief seconds, he did. He managed to stand for six to seven seconds, and for everyone involved, it felt like victory.
But the doctors cautioned against too much hope. His spinal cord was badly damaged, and over time, it became clear that full mobility wouldn’t return. Still, something else miraculous was happening—Ryzhik began to trust.
His eyes, once filled with fear and sadness, now reflected a quiet peace. He began eating with joy, his urinary system showed signs of healing, and his spirits lifted.
His recovery became a source of strength for his rescuer, who never left his side. Every day, she dedicated half an hour to help him practice walking, encouraging him with every movement. Though his body failed to fully recover, Ryzhik’s will never wavered.
He became a beloved companion, admired not just for his resilience, but for his warmth. He was intelligent, affectionate, and deeply expressive—even showing a little sass when he thought he was being ignored.
Soon, he had his own room, complete with a warm mattress and a basket of toys he adored. To make his life easier, a custom wheelchair was purchased. With it, Ryzhik could move freely again. For the first time in a long time, he had control, independence, and joy.
At his new home, he met other dogs with similar stories. They bonded quickly, forming a pack of survivors who understood each other without words.
Ryzhik’s life had changed forever. What was once a painful existence in a ditch had transformed into days filled with love, toys, freedom, and friendship.
Though he may never walk unaided, Ryzhik now rolls toward a life filled with purpose. His days are spent in comfort, his heart surrounded by those who love him deeply.
And for the rescuer who stood by him, every smile, every wag of his tail, every gleeful zoom in his wheelchair is proof that saving him was the right choice.
“Whatever the outcome,” she told him, “we face it together.”
Together, they’ve created a life where trauma is in the past and joy is the future.
